La Musica Mystery Box Mystery Solved! La Musica Tapes Vol 3

While going through some old magazines, I found the info sheets from a long ago trade that correspond to the La Musica Mystery Box mentioned here and here. As theorized in the those posts, the info sheets do correspond to La Musica Tapes Vol 3 with the catalog numbers LMB 061-070. That said, the sheets are numbered, but I don't think they correspond completely to the discs. Oi.

Download links for each disc and all of the info sheets at the bottom of the post, but here are my theories on the discs/sheets. Please leave comments if you can help me figure this stuff out! If you can translate any of the Japanese stuff for any of the comps, please post!

Disc One - I think this one is a comp, the only name I can see from the info sheet is Holy Angels. It looks like the info sheet was ripped off from this.

Disc Two - I think this corresponds to the info sheet 2

Disc 3 - Corresponds to info sheet 3

Disc 4 - This is where things get tricky. The info sheet for disc 4 lists 3 tracks by Yamasa. The actual disc has 6 tracks, so I am not sure what this disc is exactly or what info sheet it corresponds to.

Disc 5 - This one has 3 tracks so I think it corresponds to info sheet 4, Yamasa.

Disc 6 - This one has 8 tracks so I think it matches info sheet 5, Kukuri Gakudan.

Disc 7 - Not sure on this one.

Disc 8 - Not sure on this one.

Disc 9 - Kind of sounds like Holy Angels, but I am not sure.

Disc 10 - This one has four tracks and seems like a compilation, so I think it corresponds to info sheet 10.

Djin Aquarian and Plastic Crimewave Sound - Save the World LP (Prophase Music)

Damn, our friends at Prophase Music sure have been busy! Hot on the heels of the amazing reissue of Acid Mothers' La Novia comes a brand new release from Yahowha 13's Djin Aquarian and Chicago psych punks Plastic Crimewave Sound called Save the World!!

An album three years in the making (you dig my pics and words from their East Coast tour here), this one was worth the wait. Truly the ohhhmmm/duhhhh you (I) were (was) hoping for! Deep, swirling jams that blend a perfect mix of spontaneous and telegraphed moves in a headwash/rush of super fucking psychedelic tightrope walking. The original material is superb (especially the 15 minute+ "Ride My Merkabah") ; Djin tends to play an acoustic through a battalion of effects pedals (I am a sucker for such things) and it meshes perfectly with the tasteful electric sitar of Hands of Hydra as the rhythms keep some sense of reality intact.  When the band revisits the Father Yod classic "I'm Gonna Take You Home" things really take off and it is hard not to get all whirling dervish caught up in it.

These jams are housed in an absolutely gorgeous gatefold sleeve with art from Mr Plastic himself, the inner sleeve is triptastically amazing and apparently black light friendly. The pics do not do it justice! Looks like this is limited to 500 copies with an equal split between gold vinyl and blue vinyl (don't quote me on that, discogs). Get on it!

Acid Mothers Temple - La Novia vinyl available now!

What is the best Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. album? Fuck if I know, but one of my faves is their 2000 album La Novia. Originally issued on LP by Eclipse Records and then on CD (with bonus tracks) by Swordfish, both versions have been out of print for a few years now (the LP sold out almost immediately over 10 years ago). A forty minute work out of the Occiatian song "La Novia" was an early example of Tsuyama's awes throat singing on record and still the most amazing and the band continues to perform the song regularly at their live shows. And of course that riff! God! At long last, Prophase Music's long planned vinyl reissues is here! The sound is amazing and full, the reissue comes in a beautiful gatefold sleeve and four colored vinyl combos! Holy shit! Anyways, limited pressing of 1000 units and this is the best La Novia ever sounded. I am not sure how many of each color were pressed (your intrepid reporter is working on it), but the Gold and Yellow Swirl version is "super limited" and available only from the band or from Prophase Music if you buy the other three color combos... whew! Here is what the label has to say:
The sprawling 40 minute title track is based on an Occitanian folk tune, and the unearthly acoustic opening with its overtone singing sounds like something that might have made its way on to a Werner Herzog soundtrack. Indeed once the guitars come in and the band stoke up their mighty drone, the effect is that of an amped up Popul Vuh, the German band who soundtracked many Herzog films. Ashra Tempel or Amon Duul are other reference points. At times, it's impossible to believe that this wasn't recorded in Berlin in 1972, such is the authenticity of the enterprise. But Kawabata's crew aren't merely K-tel Krautrockers; La Novia shows a deep respect for the traditional folk form and integrates it completely with the long forays into deep space...

Asahito Nanjo - M (LA-045)

Another recently digitized cassette, this one is a solo album from the La Musica man, the High Rise heavy, the Mainliner main man, Asahito Nanjo! This one is labeled as LA-045 and here is the description from the La Musica catalog:
045. ASAHITO NANJO / M A compilation of secret projects recorded over a period of twenty years. Deeply personal music that achieves a strange balance between beat folk baladry and off-key mumbling. Suggestive self-celebratory music conceived as a confirmation of existence.
That said, the sleeve seems to indicate that this was recorded live in one sitting, but the pieces were written in the 80s. "Recorded live in 89" and the players are:

Nanjo Asahito - Guitar, vocals
Matsucka Takashi - Piano, electronics

Some very beautiful and quiet Nanjo stuff, not the overload of Mainliner, etc. A total confirmation of existance!

Note: All of the music is on both, but track 3 was a burn error and is not included.

Harry Pussy April 24 1997 Balcony, Philadelphia PA

Finally got around to digitizing some cassettes and this one, 25 minutes of live Harry Pussy, while pretty grimey it is better than I recall it sounding at the time. I don't remember much of this show, I know the Hale Bopp Noise Ensemble opened up and I think the No Neck Blues Band played, too, but not positive on that. I am not sure if I recorded this inside of a messenger bag or if the sound guy (Art maybe?) let me set up Eric or Art's handheld deal by the soundboard. Regardless, it was recorded at the Balcony in Philly.

Anyways, I was and still am a huge mark for Harry Pussy and they were so over the top awesome to see.

Thanks to Acid Punks for giving the audio a bit of a cleansing, too! Divided into two parts, first of which is 4 minutes or so, second is 20 minutes.

Acid Mothers Sunday Vol 39: Kawabata Makoto and Kengo Iuchi Live April 4 1999 Nagoya Tokuzo

Dug out some CDrs from old trades while doing some spring cleaning and discovered this 30 minute duo performance from Acid Mothers Temple main man Kawabata Makoto and Japanese "noise folk" artist Kengo Iuchi from 1999. Noisy and thick and sometimes bleak.

Not sure where I got this or the lineage, but this one is in FLAC format. Enjoy!

Left Hand Monkey Wrench: A Burnt Psych Tribute to the Grateful Dead (Prophase Music)

Prophase Music is stoked to announce the release of the long rumored, eagerly awaited Left Hand Monkey Wrench: A Burnt Psych Tribute to the Grateful Dead.

Five plus years in the making, this 3LP and 2CD collect some of the world’s best underground psychedelic artists paying respect to the original acid band. From well known names to downright obscurities, each song resonates with the sort of individualised psychedelia the Dead brought to their own cover songs.

Pressed on red, white and blue vinyl with artwork from Birds of Maya’s Jason Killinger and curated by Nice Pooper Fanzine, Left Hand Monkey Wrench is uh, tripped out! Coming in 2012!

Philly/NYC instrumental trio the Notekillers turn in a blazing guitar heavy take on one of the Dead’s early originals with “Cream Puff War.”

Georgia by way of Philly mod rockers Photon Band twist “He’s Gone” into a bouncy sunny psych jam

Genre defying Aleister X walks out of the club and down “Shakedown Street.”

Iowa’s Mondo Drag visit the vaults for a watery perfect take on “Rosemary”

The lush Lehigh Valley organic sound of We Have Heaven swells and envelopes “China Cat Sunflower”

Chicago psych punks Plastic Crimewave Sound meet up with the ultimate paint peeling improv guitar hippie, Djin Aquarian of the Father Yod "thing" for “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)”

Mellow down with the tri state area easiness of Twin Atlas as they make “The Wheel” all blurry.

Raunch the hell out with Philadelphia’s Birds of Maya on their ultra jam of the ultra Bobby “The Music Never Stopped”

Ethan Miller (Howlin Rain/Comets on Fire) crafts a slowed down epic out of “Til the Morning Comes”

Washington DC/Saturn’s Dark Sea Dream bleed “Fire on the Mountain” to the very essence of the riff and things turn utterly beautiful.

Japan’s psych heroes Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno make the sun come up in the West with a long, gorgeous take on “Eyes of the World”

Like a Fox hail from Philadelphia and turn “Cosmic Charlie” into a sound soaked shift changing blast from the noise pop future.

And what Grateful Dead tribute album would be complete with out a drum break? Kohoutek’s Nathan Bowles & Scott Verastro blast out and off with a “Drums” that will keep you twirling.

Croatia’s Seven that Spells rockets off with a precision take on “The Eleven”

Pouring High Water, a mysterious project from Japan turns in a slow motion drone epic with “Franklin’s Tower”

From NYC, La Otracina take “The Other One” into a tripped out metal prog war!

Things finish up with a smiling, life affirming take on “Ripple” from Baltimore’s Mopar Mountain Daredevils

Coming soon... stay tuned...
